How the Stories of Us Shape Our Schools

As we settle in to this challenging school year, MassCUE, MASCD, and our other partners will continue to provide meaningful professional development for our community. Whether it is Covid, School Closures, Remote Learning, or Racial Injustice, 2020 has forced all educators to take another look at everything we believe, teach, lead and where our schools are in supporting all of our students. With this in mind, we are excited to announce that this November, MassCUE and MASCD will again jointly host an after-school virtual event for school leaders centered on our organizational commitment to foster antiracist learning communities in all schools. We are very excited to welcome nationally recognized presenters Kass and Cornelius Minor (kassandcorn.com) recently featured on The New York Times podcast “Nice White Parents,” to share their story in a forward-looking keynote address. Afterward, attendees will have an opportunity in breakout groups to network and share with other educators in similar roles how we might continue this crucial discussion. We look forward to you joining us for this outstanding event!

In this 45 minute workshop-style keynote, participants will explore how identities and life experiences shape the values educators hold most dear, and inform how those values are sustained within a school community. Kass and Cornelius will use story-telling methods that can live within a variety of learning spaces, particularly during challenging times, to demonstrate how holding on to who we are, modeling our vulnerability, and surfacing our core values provides a foundation for teaching and learning that can survive pushback, pandemics, exhaustion and uncertainty. Participants will receive a variety of resources to incorporate story-telling and the oral tradition within their learning spaces to inspire, engage, and generate literacy practice for youth in their learning spaces.
