MassCUE will again host its popular Datapalooza…but this year it will be virtual and our focus will shift to address issues that are now pressing in remote and hybrid learning environments. Assessment and data collection at the classroom, school or district level has always been a challenge, but now it is even more complex given the tremendous variation in pandemic-era teaching and learning environments. This year’s MassCUE Datapalooza will focus on questions that are important to answer when students are not in a physical classroom setting. Such as:
- How do we know that students are learning?
- How do we modify and implement formative assessments for virtual classrooms?
- How do we assess SEL in the online environment?
- How do we measure student engagement?
- What data is important to communicate to assure parents and the community?
- How do we talk about assessment in the current remote and hybrid learning environment?

Keynote: Data to Inform Instruction in Remote Learning

Opening the school year with all students learning remotely, it was a priority for the Springfield Public Schools to identify ways of gathering, analyzing, and planning from data on student learning, engagement, and well-being. In this session, we will discuss shifts in our assessment strategy, implementation of a monthly well-being survey of students, development of daily student engagement reports, and the role of the community data warehouse in sharing data with partners. Our efforts to use data in support of remote learning are a work in progress and we will share both successes and challenges.
Paul Foster is the Chief Information and Accountability Officer for the Springfield Public Schools. He is responsible for technology, digital learning, assessment, data, and research. In this role he has led the implementation of a one-to-one computing program for every student in the district; expanded the availability and use of data and predictive analytics; launched Springfield’s computer science for all initiative; led the District’s Portrait of a Graduate and strategic planning process; and, created the community data warehouse for data sharing between the school district and community-based organizations.
Mr. Foster’s background is in research and data analytics in the public sector as he served five years as the Regional Information Center Manager at the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission; one year as an Analyst with the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center; three years as the founder and first Director of the City of Springfield’s CitiStat performance management program. A proud resident of Springfield, he has a BA in History and African American Studies from Harvard College and an MA in Social Policy from Brandeis University.
Denise Matuszczak is the Sr. Administrator of Digital Learning and Assessment for the Springfield Public Schools. In her role, she leads the implementation of the district’s learning management platform, supports educators with integrating digital tools into their instructional practice, and prepares school teams for the successful administration of the state MCAS assessment. Working with Springfield educators, she currently leads the work of the Digital Literacy NOW grant, an initiative to integrate computer science standards into the middle school curriculum.
Ms. Matuszczak’s combined background in administration and education has supported her desire to serve in a public-school setting. She served as a Financial Performance Analyst in Springfield Public Schools for two years before transitioning to the role of Administrator of Assessment, Research, and Accountability, a position she held for seven years. For the past six years, she has served as the Senior Administrator of Digital Learning and Assessment. Ms. Matuszczak holds a BS in Business Administration from Western New England University, a MA in Public Administration from American International College, and a MA in Education from The College of Our Lady of the Elms.

MassCUE will be hosting our annual Datapalooza virtually this year. We encourage educators to present ways they have found helpful in assessing and analyzing data to better inform teaching and student learning in a blended or remote environment.
