Google Tools to Improve Your Workflow

Start the new year off with learning how to improve your workflow with Google Tools! In this twoweek online course, we will explore how to maximize the power of the Google Suite to improve your workflow. We’ll learn the basics of these tools as well as lots of tips and tricks that will keep you more organized and efficient.

Margaret Peixoto

Margaret Peixoto taught high school math for six years at Bishop Feehan High School. She is currently the Learning Commons Director at BFHS and teaches AP Seminar and online SAT Prep. Margaret earned her undergraduate degree in Mathematics from Villanova University and her Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from Providence College.  She holds her Innovative Educator Certificate, Leading Edge Certification for Online and Blended Learning and loves learning new things to improve her work in the classroom.  She provides professional development for Bishop Feehan High School, MassCUE and Framingham State University.  Margaret is enthusiastic about helping teachers reflect on their teaching and integrate technology into their classrooms.

 

 

 

Weekly Outline:  

This course will follow this general outline but will be tailored to the needs of the participants. A survey at the beginning of the course will ask participants to share their current tech usage and comfort level as well as their tech needs so that the instructor can create offer modules that best fit those needs. 

Week 1 

Online Session 1: Google Drive 

Learn the basics of Google Drive including the difference between Drive File Stream, My Drive, Shared Drives and Priority. Learn how to organize your files as well as tricks for finding files faster. Learn how to start, stop, limit and change share settings on Google Drive files and folders. Learn how to save time and prevent confusion by working collaboratively on shared documents. 

Online Session 2: Gmail 

Learn the basics of Gmail, including signature, vacation responder, undo send, and smart reply. Learn how to attach files from Google Drive and create hyperlinks in the body of your email. Learn simple tricks for improving your workflow, including nudges, schedule send, snooze, side panel calendar, and side panel tasks. 

Week 2 

Online Session 3: Google Calendar 

Learn the basics of Google Calendar, including how to create events, edit event settings, and add guests. Learn how to organize your calendar and set reminders so you never miss a meeting! Learn ways to streamline and organize your tasks by adding agendas from Google Drive to events, creating appointment slots, sharing appointment calendar, and adding new calendars. 

Online Session 4: Google Forms & Google Sheets 

Learn the basics of creating and sending Google Forms. Learn the basics of finding and sorting responses in Google Sheets.  Dive deeper into Google Forms & Google Sheets by learning how to use formulas to move responses to new tabs or spreadsheets. 

This course supports the following Massachusetts Digital Literacy and Computer Science standards:

3-5.DTC.a.2 Navigate between local, networked, or online/cloud environments and transfer files between each (upload/download). 

3-5.DTC.c.2 Perform searches to locate information using two or more key words and techniques to refine and limit such searches. 

3-5.CT.b.4 Write an algorithm to solve a grade-level appropriate problem (e.g., move a character/robot/person through a maze, instruct a character/robot/person to draw a specific shape, have character/robot/person start, repeat, or end activity as required or upon a specific event), individually and collaboratively. 

3-5.CT.b.5 Detect and correct logical errors in algorithms; written, mapped, live action, or digital. 

3-5.CT.c.4 Utilize a database, such as a spreadsheet, to collect, organize, graph, and analyze data to answer a question. 

6-8.CAS.c.2  Identify and discuss the technology proficiencies needed in the workplace, as well as ways to prepare to meet these demands.  

6-8.DTC.a.5 Develop and conduct an online survey, individually and collaboratively. 

6-8.DTC.b.2 Collaborate synchronously and asynchronously through online digital tools (e.g., not necessarily in the same time and place).  

6-8.DTC.c.1 Perform advanced searches to locate information using a variety of digital sources (e.g., Boolean Operators, limiters like reading level, subject, media type).
