Curriculum-Based Building in the Makerspace: Creating Wetus

Learning Tour Overview

The goal of this learning tour is to give participants the opportunity to observe how hands-on, curriculum-based, and inclusive creating and learning can occur in a low-cost space.

Participants will observe our third grade students as they design and build model Wampanoag wetus as part of their curriculum study of Massachusetts history. Students will work in our new “Makerspace on a Budget,” using only low-cost and no-cost materials provided in the Makerspace or found outdoors (such as twigs and bark). They will use engineering principles as well as their imagination to create a structure that will meet a set of basic criteria. This project serves as a stepping stone toward a second curriculum project in the spring in which students design habitats suited for different planets during their study of the solar system.
