Arts Integration: Developing Innovation and Creativity in the Classroom

This course will explore and examine strategies and techniques bring innovation and creativity into the elementary classroom through the arts.  Participants will explore principles of PBL, STEAM, and collaborative teaching practices as methods to integrate the arts into the classroom. Activities will include readings, videos, hands-on activities, discussions, and feedback sessions. The course will identify and study leading innovators in the field, such as the Buck Institute, Education Closet, Turnaround Arts, and Tricia Fuglestad with Dryden Arts to name a few. Participants of this workshop will walk away with a library of engaging ideas and lessons that can be implemented into the curriculum immediately. 


Weekly Outline:  

Week 1 – 3/2/20: Introduction to Arts Integration: Learn about and examine various practices that effectively integrate the arts into core content areas.  

– PBL: Examine successful PBL projects stressing arts integration. 

– Design Thinking 

– Identify why the arts are critical in turning STEM into STEAM. Explore common STEAM practices such as challenges, makerspaces, tinker trays, and more. 

Week 2 – 3/9/20: Cross-Curricular Connections: Explore how collaborative practices can enhance arts integration into specific content areas to create strong learning connections. 

Week 3 – 3/16/20: (Online with an option for in person meeting) Robotics and Coding: Explore how robotics and coding programs can be used to drive innovative learning. Robotics will include BeeBotsLittlebits, Lego robotics, Scratch and more. 

Week 4 – 3/23/20:  Tech Integration: Explore ways to innovative tech resources to create engaging learning experiences. Edtech applications will include programs such as Puppet Pals, Stop Motion Studio, Chatterpix, Do Ink greenscreen and animation, and Flipgrid. 

Final Project Due by 4/2/20 

Project Description:  

Those educators wishing to receive one credit from WSU will be creating a lesson or classroom practice that incorporates at least one tool or strategy that demonstrates arts integration and innovative practice. Educators will submit a well-developed lesson plan with sample project.
