Know Who You Are

Presenter:  Steve Guditus 

Knowing how you lead starts with knowing who you are. We all have things that get us excited about the work we do, but we also have things that we struggle with in our journey as educators. Knowing the WHO helps when the WHAT gets to be tough. Understanding self care, intentionally leaning into strengths can help as we move ourselves forward.  

Steve Guditus is the Director of Educational Technology for the Tri-Town School Union, which serves the elementary schools of Boxford, Middleton, and Topsfield, MA. Previously, Steve was a middle school principal, middle school assistant principal, and middle school Social Studies teacher. He is passionate about student engagement, innovation, and integrating edtech with fidelity and purpose. He lives in Boston with his husband.

Every Interaction Matters

Presenter:  Dr. Joe Sanfelippo

Every interaction matters because every interaction could be the one they talk about for the rest of their lives. School perception is often based on the narrative of those who attended schools years ago. If we are INTENTIONAL about walking into every conversation knowing it could be the one they talk about for years to come, we OPEN DOORS for that outside to see us for who we are and BUILD MOMENTUM by creating a culture where every story matters we have a tremendous opportunity to impact the narrative of our students, teachers, and community.

Leading in Crisis 

Presenter:  James Jette 

Schools and community partnerships have always been important. In light of COVID-19 they have never been more exposed. Two things bubble to the surface during a crisis. One is how well do educators know their students? The other was what are they willing to do for them when that crisis occurs. Knowing and understanding the needs of those you lead serves as the baseline for how we connect and lead through the crisis. 

James Jette  is the current Superintendent of the Milton Public Schools. Prior to becoming the Superintendent of Milton on August 21, 2020, I served as the Principal of Milton High school for 8 years and Principal of Pierce Middle School for 4 years. In addition to these roles, I have also served as a Vice Principal, Guidance Counselor, Director of Transportation and the Director of the Milton Summer Enrichment Program. I am a passionate educator who enjoys collaborating with others who are committed to the success of all students and those who strive for equity which in the Milton Public Schools we define as, “creating conditions in which students of all identities have the resources and support they need to reach their full potential in order to thrive”.

From Movement to Moment

Presenter: Craig Martin

When people don’t know what you do, they make up what you do. The last year has reinforced that thought with educators across the world. In days we were able to build new connections, create new content, and find ways to engage kids in the learning process. Amazing things were happening throughout the country. Yet the narrative was built on what MORE schools could do. All of those conversations, posts, articles and television clips have taken a toll on our education communities. It’s is time to recharge. Educators did incredible things in an environment that none of us have seen before, but if we don’t find a way to reflect on what happened and continue to rebuild a system that works for all learners, we have missed one of the positives to come out of the last 14 months. Take a breath, realize the impact you have had on kids, and find ways for those moments to turn into a movement that rebuilds the process of school.

Craig Martin is an award-winning teacher and principal, and frequent speaker on leadership, diversity, equity, inclusion, social-emotional learning, culturally responsive pedagogy & practice, and culturally responsive teaching. He serves as the Executive Director of Bridge Boston Charter School in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood. Craig was named the 2018 National Distinguished Principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals and 2018 Elementary Principal of the Year by the Massachusetts School Administrators Association. In 2009, Boston Public Schools awarded Craig the Educator of the Year award.

Presenter:  Trelane Clark 

Comedian Michael Jr. Says “When you know your WHY, your WHAT has more impact because you are walking in or towards your purpose. Defining your why as an educator is important, finding ways to bring that why to the world is truly important. We don’t get run down by the stuff we do, we get run down because we forget why we started doing it. 

Ms. Trelane Clark is the principal at Hooks Elementary School in Chelsea, Massachusetts, a city adjacent to Boston. She has been serving in education for 25 years in public, private, urban, and suburban schools. She believes that building relationships is central to the work that educators must do. Her personal mission is to stay grounded in faith while learning through life’s experiences that empower her to empower others. Trelane’s professional mission is to inspire educators to THRIVE, Teach from the Heart, model Resiliency, lead with Integrity, Value relationships, and ensure Equity for all. She serves as the National Vice President of Black Women Education Leaders, Inc.

Know You’re Never “Just”

Presenter: Nili Bartley

“I’m just…It’s a phrase we hear all the time. I’m just a teacher, I’m just an assistant principal, I’m just a tech director, I’m just a custodian…. the list goes on and on and is always followed by reasons something CAN’T happen. Leadership is not a title, it’s an action…and it starts from within. Identifying leadership traits in yourself changes your mindset when thinking about leading those around you. Part of our responsibilities as leaders are to identify leadership traits in others. The opportunities are endless for those who choose to lead…it’s our job to find those traits, focus our efforts on growth opportunities, and foster an environment where everyone has a chance to lead.  

Nili is currently a technology teacher and digital learning/innovation coach at Wilson Middle School in Natick, MA. After an eleven year adventure in the classroom, Nili’s technology integration role at the elementary level for the next three years pushed her to see the importance of a thriving culture and led her to write “Lead beyond Your Title: Creating Change in School from Any Role.” Nili is committed to sharing her passions beyond the school community and is always excited to connect with other educators.

Be a Strength Connector

Presenter: Jen O’Neill

To know that there is someone else in the building that could help with the struggle or amplify the success is one thing. To act on it and connect the people brings a sense of community and shared ownership. This is also important because it helps those who don’t always get a tremendous amount of attention for their strengths, the attention and connection that they need to stay engaged as well as not burdening those who are always selected to help out because they are exceptional at their work. If we continue to toot the proverbial horn of the few, everyone else turns into the audience and those being put on a pedestal get worn out, resented by those never getting chosen, or both. 

Jen is the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching & Learning for Norton Public Schools. Prior to moving to the dark side, Jen was an elementary classroom teacher. Passions in education include supporting global education initiatives, empowering teachers to take on leadership roles, and developing new educators. Jen lives in Mansfield with her two children (12 & 9), her husband and two dogs.

Don’t Expect Yourself in Others

Presenters: Dean Packard and Chris Starczewski 

Everyone is at different places in their world and it is important to recognize that HIGH expectations for staff don’t automatically equate to MY expectations of how things get done. When we know more about our staff, what they need, who they connect with, and how we can support their growth, not our interpretation of what it should look like we give them a voice and ownership of the process. We are there to HELP WITH not to DO TO.

Dean Packard has worked for 28 years in the Dudley-Charlton Regional School District. During his educational journey, he has held many titles, including: coach, social studies teacher, Assistant Principal and Principal. His last 19 years have been in leadership serving as an assistant principal and principal at Charlton Middle School in Charlton, MA. “Each day I have the distinct pleasure of serving my students, staff and community as we are all on a path toward continuous growth.” In addition, he is the co-moderator for a national educational platform called: UnlockTheMiddle. He and his colleague, Principal Christopher Starczewski of Dudley Middle School, started this platform to give back, celebrate and network about amazing aspects of education. Over the last year they have led over 150 episodes capturing the true heroes in education. Check them out on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube @unlockthemiddle. Living by the motto: “Students First & Every Student, Every Day”, Dean continues to seek his own professional growth so he can be the best leader possible.

Chris Starczewski is currently the proud principal at Dudley Middle School (grades 5-8) in the Dudley-Charlton Regional School District in Massachusetts; his hometown. “As an educator with experience in both private and public school settings, I have been blessed to work with a variety of learners and educators.” In his role, he enjoys seeing his students grow and make gains over time. He enjoys working with and supporting educators by implementing best practice strategies and taking risks with authentic and innovative ideas.
