Teaching Students to create Infographics for Deeper Learning with Piktochart in the Grades 4-8 Classroom

Gone are the days of using a simple poster to demonstrate student understanding.  Infographics require students to synthesize information and create a way for it to be represented using images.  Infographics can be used in nearly every discipline!  We will explore various types of infographics, look at three different projects in technology, L&L and science and then have time to play with a FREE and EASY-TO-USE tool called Piktochart that runs on tablets and laptops. You and your students will both love this tool and this new form of assessment.

Design Personalized Learning with OERs

Working professionals don’t use textbooks or take tests daily, and are using and less and less paper to do their work. Why should our children learn in an entirely different environment when preparing for the professional world? Openly licensed educational resources have become more prevalent in school districts in the past year. Learn why and how one classroom teacher cut out textbooks, tests, and paper to transform her students’ learning experiences every day.

Participants will:

  • See classroom examples from the middle and upper elementary levels.
  • Experience a lesson custom-built with OERs at their own pace.
  • Explore OERs that fit the content and skills they teach.
  • Design a lesson to bring to their students in the fall.

Trainer: Robin Tucceri

Makerspace Playground

Whether you are just getting started or you have a makerspace up and running this session is for you! Teachers, librarians, and technology integration specialists will have the opportunity to explore literature and resources that can transform any space into a creative makerspace designed to get students and teachers thinking and creating. This is a hands-on session with plenty of time devoted to exploring tools from low-tech to high-tech, from recyclables to electronics.

Learning to Learn Through Inquiry-Based Research Projects (K-8)

Using an inquiry-based research process to teach content allows students to activate their curiosity, develop their own questions, organize their thinking, identify and evaluate reliable sources of information, apply new knowledge, and reflect on the process–to learn how to learn. You will be introduced to the steps of inquiry-based research, learn how to incorporate it into your teaching, and explore the various forms of technology that support the process regardless of the device your students use.
