PoemPoint: Poetry Comes Alive!
This workshop will show teachers how, by using a combination of video and software, poetry can be taken off the page and turned into something lively, dynamic and fun. Attendees will be given tools for how to put a multimedia spin on poetry and be shown examples of finished projects. By showing various poems that have been adapted as short films, students are given a chance to not only hear a poem, but also to see what visual images artists have paired with particular words or phrases. Students are then given a chance to choose a poem of their own, and using PowerPoint, Flash animation, or other multimedia programs, create their own short “films” for poems that have been covered in class. The presentation will feature teacher- and student-generated samples, clips of the original short films, suggestions for tailoring the assignments to different grades and skill level, and examples of grading rubrics for use in the classroom.

Creating Interactive Documents
Interactive documents for teaching and learning can be created using Microsoft Office PowerPoint and Word. Using the Forms Toolbar and Control Toolbox, text input boxes as well as other type of interactive controls such as drop down lists, option buttons and checkboxes can be added to a document creating an interactive tool that can be used with or without the Internet. Word documents can be used as worksheets, surveys, or tests. Interactive PowerPoints can provide a differentiated approach for teaching and for assessment. Creative presentations are especially helpful for students who are visual learners. Animations can help illustrate complex processes and keep students' focus. Actions can be attached to any objects on a slide allowing for creative and effective interactive activities. These documents can be stored locally to be used in the classroom or be made available through a web site for distance learning activities.

HAWKS Radio Station: Internet Broadcasting and Podcasting
Xaverian community radio provides an immensely powerful tool for delivering educational standards and providing a real world learning experience for students, parents, and alumni. Internet radio design involves realistic problem solving, investigation, development, and innovation. Xaverian students demonstrate these skills as the disc jockeys, webmasters, and computer technicians who produce Hawks Radio. Broadcasting and podcasting also connect students to other school communities worldwide. For instance, The Modern Language Department uses podcasting to talk to other schools in France and Spain. In addition, the History Department allows students to produce a radio show on the History of Rock n' Roll. Finally, the Hawks Radio boasts a segment designated to sports and news casting. Participants will gain first-hand knowledge on how to set-up an Internet based radio station, walk away with strategies on how to produce radio shows, listen to recorded works from Hawks Radio, and leave the workshop full of ideas on how a radio station can be incorporated into the curriculum.
